Bungie’s next project has been outed by documents from an Activision court case. According to an Activision contract made public as part of court proceedings in the upcoming Zampella/West trial, Bungie is developing four “sci-fantasy, action-shooter games”. Code named “Destiny” is set to come out the first part of fall 2013 and followed by subsequent releases in fall 2015, 2017 and 2019. Bungie has agreed to create four DLC packs known as “Comet” which will release fall of 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020.

The first Destiny game will be available on Xbox 360 as well as the successor console of the Xbox, which the contract refers to as Xbox 720. Fall 2013 the first Destiny game will hit Xbox, but is contracted to hit PlayStation 3 in the fall of 2014 after a “joint technical feasibility analysis” which will determine whether or not the game “is able to be developed for the PS3 at quality and feature parity to the Xbox 360 version.”

Releases of the Comet expansion makes mention of a PC release, but will be compatible with the 360, 720 and PS4 consoles.

Whose ready for this?

I’m Not Kidding, This Game Is Shit: An explaination of 'Kusoge' games

“The Japanese term kusoge, meaning “shit game,” is a category reserved for the worst that videogames have to offer.”

I have never heard of this word before and I like it. I think it could be appropriated for ‘games that you like despite their flaws’ like Skyrim/Oblivion… Games with obvious glitches/plot holes, etc that you still enjoy playing.

Video Game Review: Non-Stop Action Can’t Hide Flaws of ‘Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City'

A review which could be used in my assignment when RE5 is discussed, as the next instalment introduces 4 player co-op and actively compares this to the L4D franchise. Clearly the L4D franchise influenced heavily the trend of horror games and would explain the divergence from the tradition of ‘survival horror’… If Capcom want to make money and Valve is making crazy money from L4D, why wouldnt you want to try that for yourself?

Interestingly, Capcom outsourced Raccoon City to another game company called ‘Slant Six’ who, in the kotaku article below, explains that it doesnt matter what the public are saying about the game as far as theyre concerned because they achieved what Capcom WANTED them to do. ie: make a four player co-op game. Worth noting however that this is clearly a game to test the waters and it is NOT RE6. Potentially the outright negative feedback from this title could mean that RE6 would return closer to it’s ‘survival horror’ roots.

Assuming Control: Mass Effect's Krogan are Analogous to White Man's Burden

An Awesome Blog which pretty much sums up the idea with it’s title. You basically decide if you want to commit genocide.

I remember EDI in the game stating how aggressive the Krogan are and how quickly they breed as a negative to undoing the effects of the genophage. Where it may well be true, that does not mean a genocide would be a good idea (ME3 does try its best to stress the fact that Krogans had art and culture beyond violence before their society crumbled/the genophage).

Aliens in scifi are often just exhaggerated cultural stereotypes and although ME’s aliens appear more complex, I like the idea that their is veiled racism in the ME world (It would be interesting to write more on this idea).

How You Got Videogames Wrong

An interesting blog about some dude who uses the ‘show dont tell’ example to explain video games. Video games ‘do’ as well as ‘showing’ and ‘telling’, with the ‘doing aspect labelled as ‘mimesis’ (imitation) and the showing/telling labelled as ‘digesis’ (Which the author labels as ‘narration,’ but I always personally thought this word meant ‘the story’s world’).

Some good ideas in the argument of what games do. Everyone is still arguing about the fact that you PLAY video games, you’d think we would be over that by now.

What If The Next Generation Thinks Video Games are Stupid?

Apparantly someone has written a book about how video games mirroring blockbusters are risking the loss of interest for the next generation. An interesting idea.

Reload Replay: BioWare responds to 'Mass Effect 3' ending backlash

reloadreplay:

Dr. Ray Muzyka took to the BioWare blog to address something I’m sure you’ve all heard about by now. There has been an overwhelmingly negative response to the endings of _Mass Effect 3_ sparking petitions an outcries from fans.

I just finished the game just before writing this post and I’m in…

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

awildpikachuappears:

When “Pokemon” was first released in Japan, there was an odd phenomenon between children ages 7-12, particularly in those using headphones to listen to the sound effects. Increase of nosebleeds, irritability, insomnia, and addiction to the game, playing for hours and hours on end and crying to the point of vomiting when the opportunity was taken away.

Roughly 70% of these cases ended in suicide.

In almost every case of the aforementioned symptoms, despite gameplay time recorded to the limit of the internal clock, the game had not progressed further than “Lavender Town”.

A closer analysis of the game revealed a tone in the audio of the music for “Lavender Town” at a pitch undetectable by fully developed human ear drums. Within weeks every unsold copy of the “first edition” the game were recalled silently and the game was re-released with re-mastered audio for “Lavender Town”.

The widely known version is said to be missing three extra tones, as well as the unique, binaural tone of the first edition, although this is unconfirmed due to the rarity of working first edition copies; in the known few that remain, the internal clock and ‘battery save’ have all timed out and ceased function, and in many cases the game will freeze upon entering any battle.

The audio post above is the original file that was heard by these children.
